4 Simple Steps to Become a Phlebotomist

Phlebotomy technicians are responsible for drawing blood from patients, and they usually work at hospitals, laboratories, or clinics. There is a lot of demand for these professionals right now, so you’ll have plenty of job security if you decide to pursue this career. If you want to work in the healthcare industry and make a decent salary, this is certainly an option that is worth considering. This is an interesting line of work that doesn’t require a ton of education or training.

1.     Get Your High School  Diploma

If you want to be a phlebotomist, you will first need to have a high school diploma or equivalent. If you never finished high school, the first step you will have to go through is getting your GED. These days a GED is just as good as a high school diploma in the eyes of most employers.

2.     Enroll in a Training  Program

Next you will need to enter into a phlebotomy training program. These programs typically last a little less than a year, and they involve working with the same kinds of equipment that you’d need to use in a professional environment. There are lots of different Phlebotomy Schools that you can attend to get this type of training, and it’s important that you review your options. The program you go into will determine how prepared you are going to be to do this sort of work once you get hired.

3.     Obtain the Required Certification and  Licensure

You will also need to obtain the necessary certification and licensure before you can become employed as a phlebotomist. You can get certified through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or American Medical Technologists (AMT). There are going to be certain requirements for eligibility, such as having graduated from an official phlebotomy training program. If you have not completed your program yet, you won’t be eligible for certification or licensure. The requirements for these credentials vary depending on where you live, so it’s important to do your research.

4.     Start Applying for  Jobs

One of the reasons that so many people are going into the field of phlebotomy is because there is a lot of job security to be had. The demand for these professionals is huge right now, so you therefore shouldn’t have any difficulty with getting one of these jobs once you have fulfilled the requirements.
