Read Time:3 Minute, 35 Second

Washington, D.C. will experience on average a 222 percent* daily increase of travelers on and around the 2017 Presidential Inauguration, according to an analysis of travelers’ booking intent by leading travel insurance provider Allianz Global  Assistance.

The findings showed that more than 114,000 people plan on traveling to D.C. on January 18 (10,833 people), 19 (27,874 people), 20 (56,933 people) and 21 (18,445 people), according to analysis of customers searching for travel from Election Day (November 8) through December 8, 2016 to Ronald Reagan National Airport, Dulles International Airport, BWI Thurgood Marshall International Airport and Union Station train station. The analysis shows that 276 percent more travelers were planning to travel to D.C. on inauguration day compared to the two Fridays prior to and following the  inauguration.

“With an upsurge of people going to Washington D.C. before, on and after the inauguration, it’s important to check the box for travel insurance,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications at Allianz Global Assistance USA. “While it can’t coordinate diplomacy, the right travel insurance policy can provide coverage and assistance for many unforeseen or unexpected events like covered trip cancelations and delays, lost, stolen or delayed luggage, medical emergencies and  more.”

Allianz Global Assistance offers travel insurance through most major U.S. airlines, leading travel agents, online travel agencies, other travel suppliers and directly to consumers. *Methodology: The data of travelers’ booking intent to purchase domestic flights or train tickets to D.C. at the time of inauguration was gathered by analyzing the number of customers that went through the online booking process of airfare, rail and package paths for partners offering Allianz Global Assistance travel from November 8 to December 8, 2016 to generate itineraries for travel to D.C. for trips less than six days in length and traveling to D.C. on dates surrounding the inauguration (1/18/2017 – 1/21/2017). D.C. was defined as Ronald Reagan National Airport, Dulles International Airport, BWI Thurgood Marshall International Airport and Union Station train station. Below is a snapshot of the  data:
