Emotional support animals are also referred to as companion animals that provide worthwhile benefits for individuals who have disabilities. Medical professionals who deal with mental health determine the benefits that someone who has mental or emotional issues can gain from animals such as dogs. These include helping to improve the symptoms of a health disorder.

Emotional Support Animals

  • Emotional support animals are usually dogs but they can also be cats as well as other domesticated animals. They are used by individuals who have disabilities that may be psychiatric or intellectual. People must have disabilities that can be verified if they want an emotional support animal to be prescribed for them.
  • You must fulfill the disability definition as it has been outlined within federal law along with a note from a mental health specialist. This note states that the individual has a particular disability and an emotional support animal would be beneficial for the person who has the disability. Animals do not require training in order for them to be emotional support animals.
  • Studies have shown that people who suffer from a range of mental, emotional and physical issues can benefit from having pets that offer emotional support. The companionship that these animals provide also eases health symptoms.

Housing

  • Protection under federal law is provided against housing discrimination to enable mentally disabled people to access and enjoy reasonable accommodation that a landlord should provide. People with disabilities can request for accommodation and waivers such as no-pet police for a companion animal. Click here for ESA letters.
  • Landlords cannot deny disabled people housing because of their disabilities and if housing is available, the accommodation should be duly provided by the landlord. People with disabilities are not subjected to extra charges or fees to receive accommodation.
  • Assistance from an animal may be required to enable the individual to have a chance to enjoy the accommodation, including public areas and charges for such pets would be regarded as discriminatory.

Travel

  • While rules vary for different airlines, there are general provisions in place for people with disabilities to travel with emotional support animals that have been prescribed.
  • Pet polices are modified to accommodate such circumstances as long as the person has the required documents and the animals are not hazardous or likely to interfere with other people.
  • Emotional assistance or support animals are not usually caged and there are no charges for flying with these animals.

An emotional assistance animal can access various facilities including business premises and offices where services are not denied to people who have their animals with them. However, the health challenges that you have that warrant having a pet do not mean that you should take certain laws and policies into consideration.

Emotional Support Letters

Emotional support letters are provided by mental health professionals and licensed therapists to explain that an animal is serving as an emotional support animal. Your therapist will need to consider you mentally or emotionally disabled before writing the letter. This is an official and formally written letter that requires a proper format.

The letters typically state that you are the medical practitioner’s patient, you are currently receiving care for your condition to alleviate a recognized mental disorder and you have a mental or emotional issue that limits an area of your life. The letter also states that it is necessary for you to have an emotional support animal as part of your treatment.
