Video-In Sept., Obama cited Yemen as a place where his counter-terror strategy was “successfully pursued” – but, today, WH Spokesman Josh Earnest called it a “safe haven” for Al Qaeda to carry out “terror attacks”:
- Obama 9/14: “This strategy of taking out terrorists who threaten us, while supporting partners on the front lines, is one that we have successfully pursued in Yemen and Somalia for years.”
- Earnest 2/15: “some extremists, including the extremists in al Qaeda and the Arabian peninsula have sought to use the instability in Yemen as a safe haven to plan and carry out operations or terror attacks around the globe.”
“It’s really important to differentiate between (the) two things,” Earnest said when questioned on the conflicting claims.
