Reality television gave America its 45th president. A growing number of cultural observers are now asking whether TikTok could deliver the next one.

That question may sound like a thought experiment, but the career of John McEntee has made it a legitimate topic of conversation. A former Director of Presidential Personnel, University of Connecticut quarterback, conservative dating app founder, and one of the most-followed political creators on TikTok, his @daterightstuff account has accumulated more than 2 billion views. No previous White House official has come close to matching that reach.

The Arc That Got Us Here

The path from entertainment to the presidency is well-worn. Ronald Reagan went from Hollywood soundstages to the Oval Office. Arnold Schwarzenegger parlayed action-movie fame into the California governorship. Donald Trump, a tabloid fixture and prime-time ratings winner, completed the arc in 2016.

Cultural historian Neal Gabler argued in his widely cited book Life: The Movie – How Entertainment Conquered Reality that American public life would increasingly be judged by entertainment standards rather than governance ones. John McEntee fits that context precisely. He entered the Trump campaign in July 2015 as a volunteer, rose to become Trump’s trusted bodyman, and was later promoted to Director of Presidential Personnel, a role that put him in charge of more than 4,000 political appointments across the federal government. Colleagues nicknamed him the “Deputy President.” None of that made him a household name outside Washington.

TikTok did.

The Platform Shift That Changed What “Presidential” Means

The 170 million Americans on TikTok, a figure cited by the U.S. Supreme Court in its Jan. 2025 TikTok v. Garland opinion, do not experience fame the way previous generations did. Public figures are no longer distant figures on magazine covers. They turn up on phone screens late at night, directly addressing the camera with no filter and no distance.

McEntee understood this shift early. His short comedic clips on @daterightstuff, created to promote his conservative dating app, read less like political messaging and more like the content Gen Z audiences actually watch. “I don’t think I’ve ever been recognized outside of D.C. for anything political I’ve done, but I get recognized almost every day walking around here,” he told USA Today.

The numbers back that up. His content has generated 116 million likes on TikTok alone. One clip, in which he plays a liberal parent encouraging children to play only with vaccinated friends, drew 1.8 million views. Another, shot at an In-N-Out with handfuls of plastic straws, reached 2.8 million. USA Today dubbed him a “TikTok Icon.” A Sept. 2024 Pew Research Center report found that 39% of U.S. adults under 30 regularly get news from TikTok, the same platform where McEntee built his audience.

Why Pop Culture Is Paying Attention to John McEntee

What makes McEntee interesting to cultural observers is the hybrid space he now occupies. He is a former White House official with a creator’s audience, an entrepreneur with a political résumé, and a former college quarterback who reaches millions of Americans on a platform Republican leadership spent years trying to ban.

“You have to speak to people where they are,” he told Business Insider in April 2023. “And I think a lot of conservatives are making the mistake of trying to be off of TikTok, or being anti-TikTok. Because that’s where all of the eyes are, as much as people want to pretend it’s not.”

That read on platforms has since moved closer to the Republican mainstream. The Trump administration repeatedly extended TikTok’s divestiture deadline. The economic stakes were real: the app contributed $24.2 billion to U.S. GDP in 2023 and supported more than 224,000 jobs, per Oxford Economics.

McEntee has been profiled by The Atlantic, Fox News, and Entrepreneur Magazine, each story framing him as a crossover figure the previous political era simply didn’t produce.

None of this predicts a presidential run. It is an observation about shifting cultural terrain: the ground that once required separate credentials for politics and celebrity no longer does. The people likeliest to spot the next unthinkable are tracking where the culture is headed, not watching C-SPAN.

President Trump’s recent interview with NBC News has ignited speculation about the Republican Party’s future leadership. While Trump suggested a JD Vance/Marco Rubio ticket would be “hard to beat,” his decision not to endorse anyone has created an unusually fluid political landscape. According to a recent RealClearPolling analysis, this openness has transformed the 2028 Republican primary from a predictable succession into a competitive contest that could include unconventional candidates—among them former White House aide John McEntee.

Beyond Traditional Candidates

Current polling shows Vance leading the field by roughly 30 points over Donald Trump Jr., Marco Rubio, and Ron DeSantis. However, RealClearPolling cautions that these numbers reflect name recognition rather than settled voter preference. The more significant development is structural: without Trump designating an heir apparent, multiple Republican factions are positioning themselves to define the party’s direction.

The potential field spans several ideological wings. On foreign policy, Sen. Ted Cruz is reportedly “seriously” considering a run, particularly as debates intensify over Iran and interventionism. Governors Glenn Youngkin of Virginia and Ron DeSantis of Florida may offer voters a more disciplined executive style. Meanwhile, the populist-media wing, represented by figures like Steve Bannon and Tucker Carlson, continues advancing a nationalist, isolationist agenda that increasingly clashes with the pro-tech faction emerging on the right.

The Dark Horse Factor

RealClearPolling’s Jonathan Draegar argues that growing disillusionment within Trump’s base could create opportunities for outsider candidates to rise quickly. A January New York Times poll revealed young voters aged 18-29 shifted dramatically over Trump’s first year, moving from -8 net support at election time to approximately -42 one year later. Economist/YouGov polling shows Trump’s approval falling among moderates and softening even among 2024 Trump voters.

This volatility leaves a substantial pool of independents, young voters, and Republicans potentially available for candidates outside the party’s existing hierarchy. Draegar’s analysis surfaced John McEntee and Marjorie Taylor Greene as potential “dark horse” contenders capable of winning back these lost voters.

McEntee’s unconventional profile illustrates how political influence now develops outside traditional pathways. During Trump’s first term, he served as the president’s “body man,” maintaining constant proximity to the Oval Office before becoming Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, where he oversaw staffing decisions across the federal bureaucracy.

Beyond government service, McEntee has built a parallel identity as an entrepreneur and digital influencer. His TikTok account @daterightstuff has generated over 2 billion views and attracted 3.2 million followers, demonstrating his ability to reach audiences through platforms that traditional politicians struggle to master.

Cultural Influence Meets Political Power

The RealClearPolling report’s inclusion of Steve Bannon and John McEntee alongside senators, governors, and congressmen underscores how unpredictable the next cycle could become. If the 2028 election is shaped by cultural influence, digital reach, and generational realignment rather than traditional political credentials, candidates dismissed as dark horses today may prove central to the narrative.

McEntee’s trajectory from White House insider to social media entrepreneur reflects a broader transformation in how political power is accumulated and exercised within the Republican coalition. Rather than climbing through governorships or Senate committees, a new class of conservative figures has emerged through media ecosystems, online platforms, and proximity to Trump-world influence networks.

Whether McEntee or any other unconventional candidate actually runs remains uncertain. What’s clear is that Trump’s refusal to anoint a successor has created genuine competition for the Republican Party’s future direction—and in an era where cultural influence rivals traditional political credentials, the definition of a viable candidate has fundamentally changed.

Epstein’s private jets, often referred to as the “Lolita Express,” had detailed flight logs maintained by pilots. His properties also maintained guest books and were staffed by employees who witnessed who came and went. These records help build timelines and prove presence.

Financial and Communication Trails

Money doesn’t lie. Wire transfers, bank records, emails, and text messages can be subpoenaed to track payments, coordination, and intent. Epstein ran a vast network with financial ties to many of his clients—any of which can be the foundation of a case.

Witness Cooperation

Federal prosecutors often rely on insider cooperation in high-profile cases. Ghislaine Maxwell’s conviction shows the government is willing to go after key enablers. Others in Epstein’s circle—staff, clients, business associates—may also be pressured to talk in exchange for leniency.

Civil Litigation

Ongoing lawsuits filed by victims have produced thousands of pages of sworn depositions, timelines, and specific accusations. Much of this evidence is available to law enforcement and can drive investigations even without a central “list.”

The Illusion of the List

The public’s fixation on a so-called “client list” is reminiscent of The Emperor’s New Clothes—everyone talks about it, but few question whether it even exists. It’s become a distraction from the real issue: the federal government doesn’t need a list. It needs to act.

Conclusion

Prosecutors already have everything they need to pursue justice—survivor testimony, records, legal tools, and cooperation agreements. We know from the 20 year sentence handed down to Ghislaine Maxwell, that the government could easily pursue more without a list. The absence of a possibly mythical document isn’t the barrier. The real scandal is the lack of political will to pursue those who were protected by wealth, power, and silence.

Recently Kevin Price, Host of the nationally syndicated Price of Business Show, interviewed John D. O’Connor.

In the wake of Donald Trump’s resounding victory, the media are all reporting on the various blame victims allegedly responsible for Kamala Harris’s defeat. While the fingers are pointing at racism, misogyny and Trump disinformation as likely suspects, one set of suspects not identified is the legacy media itself. As I wrote in Postgate, once the media saw that journalism could influence the country’s most important issues, they sought to use this power to decide our most important political questions, whether by journalism biased or simply false. But in the 2024 election, after years of baseless charges against Trump, enabled by the media, the populace saw that it was being insulted and deceived. Anyone who supports Trump is not a Nazi, a racist or a misogynist, and moreover, any media outlet that tries to convince voters of defamatory depiction of any Trump voter will do more to help Trump than hurt him. Maybe soon the media will understand, and in the election’s post-mortem one hopes that the losing party will understand, how much a negative factor the collective media was.

Kevin Price introduces Price of Business show recurring guest, John D. O’Connor. O’Connor was the famed attorney of Watergate’s “Deep Throat.

According to PostGateBook.com “O’Connor served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Northern California from 1974-1979, representing the United States in both criminal and civil cases. Among his interesting assignments have been representation of the government during the OPEC oil embargo of the 1970s; writing Fifth Amendment and “state of mind” briefs for the prosecution in United States v. Patricia Hearst; representing the FDIC, FSLC and RTC during the savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s; representing California Attorney General Dan Lungren in campaign-related litigation; defending R.J. Reynolds Tobacco in significant smoking and health litigation; representing Coach Don Nelson in litigation with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban; and representing W. Mark Felt regarding the revelation of his identity as Deep Throat.”

Price said “this is an interesting account of life in the very fast lane of celebrity media by a true authority. Murphy’s role as a Vice President for CBS Television placed him in the front role of some of the most important entertainment stories at the time.”

According to a statement, “Jeremy Murphy is a sarcastic, embittered veteran of the media industry. Founder of 360bespoke, a respected boutique PR agency in New York, Murphy handles a full roster of clients in the lifestyle, beauty, fashion, and start-up fields. Previously, he was Vice President of Communications at CBS, where he worked for 14 years. There, he oversaw PR for many of its divisions and created its glossy magazine Watch. Murphy started as a journalist, working with Knight Ridder newspapers and Mediaweek. He is a graduate of Florida Atlantic University and lives in New York with his cat, Champers.”
