Bill Nye “The Science Guy” is partnering with Sophia.org to help students fight summer brain drain with several activities that will be available on the site starting in June. Sophia is an innovative online social education platform that offers 25,000 tutorials on a variety of subjects including math, science, English and more taught by hundreds of teachers and education enthusiasts using a mixture of text, audio, video, and slideshows.
Sophia.org and Bill Nye will announce a Summer Challenge program on June 5 that will offer students a weekly chance to win iPads if they complete tutorials and quizzes on the site from June 5-July 29, 2012. In addition to the more than 25,000 free tutorials offered on the site, Sophia.org will also feature lessons from Nye and a learning path on one of his favorite topics, the Mars Curiosity Mission.
“Bill Nye has spent the past 20 years getting kids excited about science and his partnership with Sophia will help us reach even more students and keep them learning during the summer months,” said Steve Anastasi, interim CEO of Sophia. “Sophia is the perfect place for students to catch up or get a head start for the coming year because we offer content created by many teachers so students have many ways to learn, unlike other sites that offer content taught in one way, by one teacher.”
Sophia recently expanded its site to include learning pathways and quizzes in several subject areas including math and science. The site also provides students with the ability to assess their learning preference so they can choose content that helps them learn the way they learn best.
