Rural America is the beating heart of the modern Republican Party. If there is one constituency the GOP cannot live without, it is the small towns, farming communities, and wide-open counties that consistently give Republicans margins large enough to offset their losses in urban and suburban areas. Donald Trump won over 90 percent of rural counties in 2024, and it is rural voters who form the immovable base that delivers the party its Senate dominance, its Electoral College edge, and its credibility as the voice of “real America.”

The importance of this bloc is magnified by the political system itself. The Senate grants two seats to every state, regardless of population, giving low-density, heavily Republican states the same weight as giants like California and New York. The Electoral College similarly skews power toward less populated states. Even in the House, where district maps can be drawn to protect rural representation, Republicans reap disproportionate benefits. Without rural America, there is no path to power for the GOP. Which makes the next fact all the more remarkable: the party has pursued policies that actively undermine the health, stability, and future of the very voters it depends on.

The Assault on Rural Health Care

Rural hospitals are closing at an alarming rate, with dozens shuttered in the past decade and many more on life support. Instead of expanding Medicaid or increasing funding for rural health systems, Trump and his allies have doubled down on cuts. The administration’s budget proposals slash safety-net programs that disproportionately serve rural residents. Even as rural communities struggle with shortages of doctors and nurses, Washington has offered little more than rhetoric. Telehealth, once a promise for isolated towns, has been undermined by stalled broadband investment and regulatory indifference.

Farmers Under Siege

American farmers are facing an existential crisis not seen in decades. Commodity prices remain volatile, input costs are high, and foreign markets are increasingly closed off due to protectionist policies and erratic trade wars. Trump’s second term has brought no relief from the structural problems of farm consolidation. Small and midsize farms continue to collapse under the weight of agribusiness monopolies, while climate disruptions make planting and harvest seasons more uncertain each year. Federal subsidies and emergency bailouts have become a band-aid, not a cure, locking farmers into dependency rather than securing their long-term livelihoods.

Broadband and Infrastructure: Broken Promises

Candidate Trump in both 2016 and 2024 promised to deliver “big, beautiful infrastructure” that would finally bring broadband and modern technology to rural America. Instead, his first term produced little more than headlines, and his second term so far has been no better. Many rural counties still lack reliable internet access—an economic death sentence in the modern age. Students fall behind without access to digital classrooms, businesses can’t compete, and hospitals can’t deliver telemedicine. The GOP talks endlessly about bringing small towns into the 21st century, but policy outcomes show neglect, not progress.

The “Big Beautiful Bill” of 2025

Trump’s new tax legislation—branded, with his trademark flourish, the “Big Beautiful Bill”—follows the same pattern as his 2017 cuts, only more extreme. Corporate giants and high earners reap the overwhelming share of benefits, while rural schools, clinics, and local governments are left to scrape by on dwindling revenue. For family farmers and small-business owners, the promised relief is negligible compared to what Fortune 500 companies and Wall Street investors walk away with. The result is familiar: more strain on communities that already feel left behind.

Rhetoric vs. Reality

What emerges is a striking contradiction. Republicans celebrate rural Americans in speeches, campaign rallies, and cultural symbolism, painting them as the moral backbone of the nation. Yet when the time comes to govern, the policies passed under Trump have repeatedly worsened the economic, health, and social conditions of rural life. The GOP’s base is treated less as a community to be nurtured and more as a resource to be mined for votes.

Rural America may still vote overwhelmingly Republican, but beneath the surface lies a growing tension. The hospitals are closing. The farms are failing. The young people are leaving for cities with opportunities that their hometowns can no longer provide. And the party that relies most on rural loyalty continues to legislate in ways that make the decline faster, not slower.

For the GOP, rural America is both indispensable and expendable—its most important constituency, and its most neglected citizens.

In spite of the fact the GOP has a majority in both the House and Senate, there is a war going on over the US Federal Budget.

House GOP Budget Proposal:

Scale: $4 trillion package, including tax cuts and spending reductions.

Tax Cuts: Extends 2017 Trump tax cuts, eliminates taxes on tips, overtime, and Social Security benefits.

Offsets: Cuts tax perks for billionaire sports owners and hedge fund managers.

Spending Cuts: Broader cuts to social programs and domestic spending.

Strategy: Comprehensive approach—bundling tax cuts, spending reductions, and budget provisions together.

Challenges: Struggles with internal party unity; Speaker Mike Johnson working to secure agreement.

Senate GOP Budget Proposal:

Scale: $340 billion—significantly smaller and more targeted.

Focus Areas: Prioritizes border security (Trump’s wall, deportation efforts) and increased defense spending.

Tax Cuts: Plans to address tax reforms later instead of including them now.

Strategy: Phased approach—first handling immigration and defense funding before broader tax measures.

Challenges: Designed to gain bipartisan support in the Senate, where a 60-vote threshold applies.

Key Takeaways:

House plan is massive ($4T) and comprehensive, bundling tax cuts and spending changes.

Senate plan is smaller ($340B) and targeted, focusing on border security and defense first.

House emphasizes broad tax cuts, Senate plans to address tax policy later.

House aims for aggressive spending cuts, Senate takes a more incremental approach.

Senate’s approach is more likely to pass, as it avoids immediate tax-cut battles and controversial offsets.

On a recent Price of Business, Price and Robinson discussed the State of the Union and the Republican response. This includes:

* The incredibly — and arguably inappropriate political tone of the President’s speech

* The lack of decorum on the part of the GOP

* The volleying of the immigration issue

* The highly criticized Republican response — by both the GOP and Democrats

* and more

According to a statement, “Entertainment executive and producer, Warren D. Robinson believes that when organizations are willing to have open and honest conversations about race and their own bias they can commit to meaningful change. We have seen this recently in the form of Hollywood award shows, particularly, the Grammys and the Academy Awards (Oscars). The Recording Academy and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have both taken concrete steps to diversify their ranks and address inherit biases in their voting processes. As a result we have the most diverse crop of award winners/nominees, respectively, we’ve ever seen. Contrast that with the scandal and production shutdown currently at CBS’s The Talk, which resulted because a co-host was unable to properly engage in a conversation about race, address her own bias and commit to doing better. ‘The key part to every conversation’ Warren says, ‘starts with listening. Listening and hearing are different and if you are unable to listen then you are unable to have a conversation.’

“Warren D. Robinson, is an avid and accomplished entertainment executive, motivational speaker, host, life coach and award winning producer who created the wildly popular series, Buried by the Bernards, which is currently streaming on Netflix.

“Warren has served as an entertainment consultant, manager and producer, facilitating, appearing and negotiating high powered deals on behalf of his clients in front of such companies as: Warner Brothers, BET, CNN, Freemantle, Best Buy, TV ONE, Netflix, Lifetime, Fox News, WE TV, E!, NBC Universal, Viacom and more. In addition, Warren’s entertainment prowess includes coordinating, partnering and/or producing events for: legendary actress Pam Grier, Taraji P Henson, Gabrielle Union, Vivica A Fox, Soul singer Eddie Levert (of the O’Jays), Comedian Mike Epps, Angie Stone, Flavor Flav, the Indianapolis Colts, Donna Joyner-Richardson, Stephanie Mills, Erykah Badu and Tom Joyner among others. Warren graduated from Indiana University (B.A.-Political Science) and Howard University School Of Law (J.D.).”

According to a statement from Ms. Comstock, “During her time in Congress, Barbara was a leader on technology and cybersecurity issues, chairing the Science, Space, and Technology Committee’s Research and Technology subcommittee, as well as serving on the Joint Economic Committee, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and the House Administration Committee. Her legislative achievements include passing legislation to promote women and disadvantaged populations in STEM, as well as expanding research in the technology space. Barbara also was the leader on anti-sexual harassment legislation in Congress, and legislation to tackle the opioid crisis and gang crime. She partnered with Senator McCain to reauthorize multi-year firefighter grants to increase innovation and public safety.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) issued the following statement after Ways and Means Committee Republicans concluded their annual retreat to lay out their policy agenda for 2018:

“We had a positive, and I think very productive series of discussions today about how we build off the success of 2017 in this year. We have a new tax code, a stronger economy, and a President who is committed to working with us to tackle the biggest issues facing the American people. That’s a very strong foundation to build off as we move forward with policies to further strengthen communities and improve the lives of every American.

“Today, our Subcommittee Chairmen led discussions about our policy priorities for the Ways and Means Committee in 2018. And we asked ourselves: How do we modernize NAFTA and other important trade agreements and hold our trading partners accountable? … We asked: How can we close the jobs gap and help more low-income Americans lift themselves out of poverty, to help move them from poverty to prosperity, restore the respect for work, and grow our economy as we’re doing it? We asked ourselves: What role can we play in combating the opioid crisis and protecting more Americans from abuse and addiction? And: What steps do we take to ensure the IRS better serves taxpayers and that it administers our tax code in a fair, efficient, and with integrity, manner going forward? …

“These are the questions that are guiding our work going forward. … I’ve always said the Ways and Means Committee has some of the most talented, dedicated lawmakers in Congress. Certainly, [that] was proven in tax reform successfully. So, with the strong leadership of our Subcommittee Chairmen, I’m eager for us to work together this year to deliver more results for the American people.”

According to Chairman Brady’s website:

“Kevin is Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee – – considered by many to be the most powerful committee in Congress with jurisdiction over taxes, health care, Social Security, Medicare, international trade and welfare.

“A champion of free enterprise and American-made energy, Kevin’s focus is creating jobs, reducing Washington spending and sunsetting obsolete federal agencies.

“Kevin previously served as chairman of the influential Health Subcommittee for the House Ways and Means Committee. As chairman, he focused on ensuring a strong, free market in the nation’s health care industry and look for ways to increase the quality of health care, while keeping costs low.

“And as the former Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Economic Committee, Kevin is a GOP leader.

“Until 2013, Kevin was the leader of the Trade Subcommittee and led the successful effort to pass new sales agreements with Panama, South Korea and Colombia – and he served as the White House point man on the successful passage of the Central American Free Trade Agreement. On the Social Security Subcommittee, Kevin fought to preserve this important program for future generations once and for all.

“Prior to his election to Congress, Kevin worked as a chamber of commerce executive for 18 years and served six years in the Texas House of Representatives where he was named one of the Ten Best Legislators for Families & Children. In 1994 he was named one of Five Outstanding Young Texans.

“In order to stay close to the people he represents, Kevin never moved to Washington. He lives in Montgomery County with his wife Cathy and his two sons Will (18) and Sean (15) – and has logged nearly two million miles commuting to Congress each week.”

By Ross Powell, USDR Contributor

Earlier this month details emerged about the Republican plan to deal with the monstrosity that is the United States healthcare system. It doesn’t take much more than a handful of functioning brain cells to notice that under the Obama regime the Republicans in Congress voted to repeal Obamacare whenever they wanted to score some cheap political points. A large proportion of Americans found the state of their healthcare to be repugnant in price, options, and political demagoguery. The lack of accountability unveiled by the infamous ‘if you like your plan, you can keep your plan’ and ‘if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor’ propaganda is historically astounding.

But I digress.

Now that the GOP bigwigs (read: compromised cowards cloaked in red) have an opportunity to provide a real solution, you’d imagine that since they have been thinking about this for more than half a decade they would have a broad array of market-based, capitalistic, freedom-restoring initiatives to bring to the table.

Thanks for playing.

At this point anyone who still believes in the authenticity and desirability of the current two-party apparatus is either willfully blind, hopelessly naïve, or incapable of robust critical thought. Turns out each establishment party has spent decades figuring out the best ways to hammer each other on their flaws, often accurately and to great effect, while retaining a permanent blind spot to the drastic shortcoming in their own ideologies. It’s a fantastic and even entertaining charade until a glimpse of broader reality renders it sickening.

The plan was single payer. Obamacare was the bridge to strip mine the healthcare system in order to initiate a death spiral crisis that would lead the way into total government control. Hillary Clinton was supposed to be in a position to impose socialized medicine. Things were going along quite smoothly. Insurers were packing up and deserting markets all over the nation. They didn’t care because they were paid off through the risk corridor language in the legislation. Prices accelerated dramatically for years, redistributing a massive amount of wealth. The last legs of the system have been reached, and the knockout punch was just around the corner.

Why this path down Lunacy Lane? For a group that claims to be totally driven by empirical evidence, solidified science, and robust reasoning they curiously continue to ignore all of the real-world conclusions concerning the broad spectrum failures of such programs where they have been imposed. The truth is, facts don’t get in the way of ideologues. Many may simply be altruistic yet immeasurably foolish because of the transformation from education to indoctrination. However, these psychopaths generally know what they are doing and are willing to sacrifice virtually anything in order to arrive at their objectives. This is Marxism: the ends justify the means.

They were going to sell a technocratic utopia by pitching sustainability and science. The shadow goals were depopulation, eugenics, and neo-feudalism. When we abandon God and elevate humanity as the sole arbiter of truth and morality we get genocide. That is the lesson of the 20th century. Yet here we are in the 21st, and things didn’t go completely according to plan. A renegade real-estate mogul billionaire seized on something utterly unexpected. The Marxists went too far, too fast. They drank their own Kool-Aid.

Now there’s a different problem.

The proposed solutions are currently more or less a first draft consisting of window dressing. The establishment Republican leadership is filled to the brim and overflowing with cowards, sellouts, and patsies. They have long since been completely compromised by the tyrannical globalists and have been compliant because they’ve been granted a seat at the table – a healthy dose of blackmail and bribes are in play as well.

President Trump has a rather narrow window to provide actual solutions for the American people and to garner the political will necessary to unite the nation. We the people of all political predispositions understand instinctively that most things in our country are broken and that applying a new coat of paint simply isn’t going to cut it.

While it may not even be possible to encounter and to comprehend the extent to which our institutions have been damaged, solutions will be demanded vigorously. Some will oppose even a perfect plan because of the man proposing it. They are irrelevant fools. We must marshal our focus to support our President because it is abundantly clear that only a true outsider – not a Manchurian candidate like our previous fearless leader – would ever be capable of cleaning out corruption and reinstituting basic sanity.

If only it were that easy.

So many have miscalculated and underestimated President Trump because they are seeking to impose previous political norms onto someone who operates according to entirely different protocols. Our President is a negotiator. Expect significant revisions to any major legislation as it is developed. Expect him to be accused of flip-flopping and of being disorganized. Expect no shortage of internal resistance from traitors.

Most importantly, expect enough from yourself to play whatever part you can in this process. Expect involvement. Expect to be vocal and courageous. Expect opposition. Expect it to dissolve in front of you as you peacefully carry forward the torch of truth and liberty.

Either expect greatness or expect the tyranny that will ultimately result from our failure to stand up and be counted.

By USDR.

Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-TX) and Human Resources Subcommittee Chairman Vern Buchanan (R-FL) today praised the final legislation of the 21st Century Cures Act, commonly known as the “Cures Act,” for including provisions from the Ways and Means Committee that will improve the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and child welfare programs.

“The Cures Act will help families in more ways than one. I’m proud this historic legislation also includes solutions that will lift families out of poverty and ensure more children grow up in stable homes,” said Chairman Brady. “Thanks to the leadership of Chairman Buchanan and Congressman Todd Young, the Cures Act will strengthen critical welfare programs to ensure that they deliver real results for the Americans who are most in need. These bills demonstrate our commitment to improving outcomes for children, their families, and communities across America. I appreciate Chairman Upton’s leadership and his work on including these important bills in the Cures Act. I look forward to passing the Cures Act in the House this week.”

“We know that strong families make for strong communities, which is why I’m thrilled that my bill and other pro-family bills were included as a part of the groundbreaking 21st Century Cures Act,” said Chairman Buchanan. “We need to invest in proven prevention services, including substance abuse treatment, that will keep families together. This important provision will make sure that children are protected and families are not split up unnecessarily. Our current system creates a perverse incentive to place children in foster care. Breaking up families should be a last resort.”

The following bills included in the Cures Act have already been approved by the Ways and Means Committee and the full House through regular order:

H.R. 5456, the Family First Prevention Services Act of 2016 (Sponsored by Chairman Buchanan), strengthens families by promoting evidence-based prevention services to keep more children safely at home and out of foster care.

H.R. 5170, the Social Impact Partnerships to Pay for Results Act (Rep. Todd Young), supports innovative and effective social programs that deliver real results. It also provides for a one-year extension of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, whose authorization expired at the end of FY 2016, and has been temporarily extended since then.

U.S. Congressman Brady, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, and leader of the House GOP Better Way effort to reform America’s broken tax code, announces a new national video on the tax reform plan.

“This is not Washington’s tax code, it belongs to the American people. Taxpayers ought to have a real say in the way you are taxed. We invite you to view this video, come to our website to learn more about our “Built for Growth” tax reform plan, and speak up,” said Brady.

House Republicans have developed the first consensus GOP tax reform plan in 30 years, and are planning to bring a simpler, fairer and flatter tax reform plan to the House floor for a vote in 2017.
