Although, thankfully, most workplaces today will take measures to ensure that their employees are kept as safe as possible when on the job, there’s no denying that there is always a risk of a workplace injury occurring. Even when business owners take all the appropriate workplace safety precautions, including proper training and posting signage, accidents can and do happen at work. If you have been involved in an accident in the workplace that has resulted in an injury, then it’s important to know what’s best to do in this situation. Here are the steps to take if you are injured whilst  working.

Step #1. Inform Your Manager

Whether you have sustained a minor or major injury, it’s important that your line manager is made aware of the situation at the earliest possible convenience. This is so that they are able to take appropriate action when it comes to getting medical attention for you if needed, and logging the accident in the accident book for future reference. If you have had a serious accident, they should also secure the scene so that it can be investigated to determine how the accident was caused and how it can be prevented in the  future.

Step #2. See a Doctor

If you have sustained a minor injury at work, then it’s unlikely that your manager or supervisor will be required to call 911 for you or take you to a medical care facility. However, if you plan to make a claim against your employer due to your injury or will need time off work to recover from it, then you will need to get medical attention so that the injury is on record. It’s a good idea to see a doctor about any injury that you sustain in the workplace as soon as possible since this will provide further proof of the damage, along with an expert medical opinion, which is necessary if you are applying for time off or even taking the case to court in the  future.

Step #3. Consult a Lawyer

If you have suffered a major injury in the workplace and believe that you are entitled to worker’s compensation, then the next best step to take is to consult with an experienced lawyer. A good personal injury lawyer will be able to give you expert advice tailored to your case and help you make the best decisions when it comes to getting the compensation that you deserve. In some cases, your workplace may have you covered by an insurance policy and will have no problems with compensating you for your injuries. However, it’s always good to be prepared for the worst – if you end up needing to fight your employer in court for compensation, then it’s vital to have a good lawyer by your  side.

Nobody goes to work and expects to come home injured, but sadly accidents are sometimes unavoidable. If you have an accident at work that is not your fault, it’s important to know what to do next when it comes to getting  compensation.
