CBS has confirmed that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end in May 2026, coinciding with the expiration of Colbert’s contract. Official statements point to rising production costs and declining ad revenue, but the real reason runs deeper: the demographics no longer support this kind of show.

Despite Colbert’s strong ratings—often leading the late-night field in total viewers—the show skews heavily toward older audiences. Younger viewers, especially those in the advertiser-coveted 18–49 demographic, have largely moved on from traditional late-night formats. Instead, they consume comedy, news, and entertainment through TikTok, YouTube, podcasts, and streaming services.

While Colbert remained a critical and cultural force, especially during the Trump years, the economics of late-night TV no longer align with its traditional format. Advertisers are spending less on network television and more on digital platforms that offer better targeting and engagement with younger consumers.

In the end, this cancellation is not about politics or personality. It’s about the changing media landscape. Late-night talk shows, once a staple of American television, are becoming relics in a world driven by short-form, on-demand content and generational shifts in how people watch, engage, and spend.
