On a recent Price of Business show, Host Kevin Price visited with J. Reuben Appelman who is an author, podcast personality, and has been involved on every level of several major films that have appeared on Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Price, and others.

In Part 3 they discussed a bizarre culture of pedophiles that was prevalent in Detroit and the metro area during the 60, 70s, and years after. They discussed the many victims of the Cass Corridor area in Detroit whose stories may have been overshadowed by those of the affluent white children of Oakland county.

The compelling story continues.

As noted, “J. Reuben grew up just a few miles from show host Kevin Price and they both share the common story of being among the people riveted and terrified by the child murders that happened in Oakland County, Michigan. Price lived in Ferndale, Michigan and left the year before the murders happened, but heard stories from friends who lived in constant fear during the mid to late 1970s. Meanwhile, Appelman’s story hit even closer to home as a child that grew up in Southfield, Michigan.”

For years we have said that TV ads were in decline due to the rise of the Internet and there is certainly evidence of such in many industries. However, there is one area where TV advertisements are alive and well. There appears to be nothing in the advertising space with the same power as Super Bowl television ads.

Recent research by Betway offers some startling statistics as highlighted in the infograph below.

There is a saying, “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” That is definitely true when it comes to television advertising during the Super Bowl. Consider the industries most likely to use such ads:

Automotive

Tech

Beer

Film

Food

The only relatively new player to the list is technology, which has blown up in recent years. It is interesting how all of these, but automobiles, have about the same number of ads. Meanwhile, the automobile industry has double of any other industry.

“There’s no more money. Everybody is working as hard as they can to generate as much revenue as humanly possible and all, but a handful of schools operate in the red.” – Steve Patterson, former University of Texas Athletics Director

In 2011, the University of Texas signed a $295 million deal with ESPN to create The Longhorn Network. The 20-year agreement was considered a landmark at the time – while there were conference network deals such as those establishing the SEC and Big Ten Networks, this was the first large-scale single-school network dealing solely with sports.

The network roiled the Big 12 Conference, with Missouri and Texas A&M bolting for the SEC, and other Big 12 schools grumbling; the Big 12 is now the only conference without a conference-wide network. As predicted by pundits like Outkick the Coverage’s Clay Travis, the economics were not viable for a standalone network, and the business model was outdated. The result: multi-million dollar losses for the Longhorn Network.

The overall result for the University of Texas athletic program was that Texas fell from the number 1 position in terms of revenue and profit… to number 2. In the latest Forbes study, Texas finished with annual athletic revenue of $133 million and a profit of $87 million – a margin of 65%. The losses of the Longhorn Network belong to the broadcast partner, ESPN, not to the school’s athletic department.

The new #1? Cross-state rival Texas A&M, whose payouts from the SEC Network combined with vastly increased donor contributions provided $148 million in revenue and $107 million in profit (72% margin) according to Forbes. The surging contributions – fueled by the move to the Southeastern Conference and the Heisman-winning exploits of “Johnny Football” Manziel, the Aggies have parlayed their newfound popularity into a $485 million stadium expansion and the top of the financial leader board.

Nine of the top 16 highest-revenue teams in the Forbes survey hail from the SEC, five of which have won at least one national championship in the past 20 years; yet of the top three schools – A&M, Texas, and Michigan – none has participated in the College Football Playoffs that were implemented in 2015.

As the profits soar, however, college football has faced issues. A recent Wells Fargo report documents declining attendance, even at the “Power 5” conferences (SEC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC-12, ACC), as the TV market is saturated with multiple games televised throughout the week and all day on Saturday. TV ratings for college football have not seen the same ratings erosion that the NFL has experienced, despite most NFL games appearing on broadcast TV and college games being sprinkled across various broadcast and cable outlets: four games during opening weekend topped 5 million viewers, and ESPN’s perennial stalwart College Gameday still draws close to 2 million viewers. While the NFL network partners came in $500 million in advertising revenue under targets, college football benefits not only from television contracts, and gameday revenue from ticket sales, concessions, and parking, but also from donors – the aforementioned Texas A&M collected $260 million in contributions over a 3 year period.

College football has several advantages over the professional game that have insulated it from the ratings declines seen in professional football and in other programming in general. Many of the top programs are located where there is no competition from a professional franchise, sometimes in any sport, e.g., Alabama, Nebraska, and South Carolina. College football has not drawn the ire of fans over National Anthem protesting. And, unlike the NFL, nearly every college game is available on TV, regardless of where in the country you live; the NFL allows regional showing of games, and so anyone wanting to see a different game has to go to a sports bar or else purchase a costly “NFL Sunday Ticket” package.

It is yet to be seen what impact head trauma will have on football participation overall – the NFL and the NCAA have faced lawsuits over head injuries and CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) – but for now, college football is indeed Big Business. There is, indeed, “more money”.

Let’s face it. Even a toddler nowadays, at a tender age, seem to know how a mobile phone or tablet works. They can easily access any video under the sun, and yes, violence is one of those things that they have full exposure every single day. Even the games that they can readily download from the internet seem to promote battles and wars where the victory over enemies is the main goal. Zombies or annihilation of the human kind, complete with horrifying background sounds, also hold their ever-changing interest. I can name more, but do you get my drift?

Violence, aggression or hostility seems to take the limelight nowadays. It can found in so many ways. It could be in the form of an action program showing on the television, a murder news on the radio, morbid headlines on the newspaper, a quick search from the internet or worse, one they can experience in real life. Even the cartoons that your kids watch every day seem to promote violence, one way or the other. That latest action movie showing in the cinemas today? Yes, that one too.

Now that you think of it, these things seem to appear harmless. But extreme exposure to violence for kids, (in so many ways) really is a bit alarming. When was the last time that you sat down with a kid, watching a cartoon, and said to yourself, “Is this even appropriate for a child to watch?”. I bet that was a long time ago. We probably get used to these everyday occurrences that we tend to think, it is normal. Just imagine how these seemingly harmless exposures to aggression inadvertently mold the psychological state of mind of a kid. Pretty daunting, isn’t it?

Today, we are all living in the digital dimension, information (good or bad) are all readily available within a click of a finger. The invention of the ever powerful internet has changed the course of our lives in more ways than one. Unfortunately, this overpowering privilege to information availability also comes with repercussions. More so affecting the innocent lives of our children, one way or the other.

It does seem noteworthy to point out that children nowadays spend most of their time watching the television. And you can guess what is being shown in it, violence (either figuratively or explicitly). It even became more dynamic, graphic, sexual and sadistic. Video games involving physical battles played by children make them think it is okay to have physical battles in the real world towards other people. Music videos push them into violent territories as they try to copy what they see and hear. Virtual violence is also readily available on the internet. Children can easily download violent lyrics, violent movies, and other censored images. Horror movies and other movies combined with sexual imagery and violence create a disturbing effect on them. They are exposed to scenes of death, dismemberment, mutilation, sex and other morbid things. These are just some to name a few.

Their exposure and immersion to television and other electronic media are also known to interfere with their social activities such as playing, exploring and interacting with people. So instead of running around and playing in the sun outside with friends, which develops their social skills, most of the children would prefer to be at their beds or at the couch, either playing the latest video game in the television or on their mobile phones. Hence, more children tend to be overweight as they lost their chance to run around and sweat it all out, playing in the park or simply being outside their homes.

Children exposed to violence in various modes of media tend to increase their aggressive behavior, cognition, thoughts, and feelings. They also tend to be less empathetic and depreciating pro-social behaviors. This can also result in long-term effects making children sadistic and show manifestations of misogyny. The long-term exposure of children to violence in media can treat these violent actions as norms. They tend to do violent actions without regard to consequences. This can shape them into becoming violent adults and becomes a potential nuisance to the society.

With all these atrocious exposures to hostility in mind, how do you think we (adults) are faring in terms of molding our future generations? Ever heard the saying from T.S. Eliot, “Home is where one starts from”. Every kid, especially in the development stage, would learn everything from parents first, siblings if applicable, other friends they make along the way and family members. Then come the school and the community around them. Those who are surrounding the children have to made aware of how they can guide these kids on the right path. I heard it said somewhere, “It’s not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves, that will make them successful human beings”.

Imagine that the kid is a seed that is planted on the ground. There are generally two outcomes for the seed, depending on the ones taking care of it. If it was neglected, not exposed to sunlight, and no water for nourishment, the seed will not grow, and eventually will wither and die. On the other hand, what do you think will happen if it was planted where direct sunlight hits the ground, watered down properly and sometimes, even being lovingly talked to? Of course, the seed will flourish into a plant, strong and alive. This analogy can also apply to how are we going to mold our children’s values and morals. Are we going to be as careless as the other one who neglected the kids or are we going to be the guardians who will properly nourish the minds of our children? Proper guidance would always be a contributing factor to ensure that this daily exposure of children to violence does not get out of hand. This can simply start with the immediate people at their homes, the media, government and eventually, the whole world.

There are some simple ways that we can do to protect the minds of our children. The first thing is proper communication. The amount of time we spend with them is extremely important. Make sure that the kids are properly informed and that their unending questions are also answered in the best way we could. Being surrounded by caring adults would have much more impact on the psychological development of the children in ways more than we can ever imagine. We can also give them a pet and make them responsible for them so that they would have a sense of responsibility. It is also known to make children more sociable, sensitive, caring and have less time to play games on their mobile phones because they would rather play with their pets instead. Lastly, it would also be a good idea to make sure that the children are involved in after-school activities or sports, artwork, part-time jobs or tutoring programs.

Fear not, my fair maidens and handsome lads! Although the future might appear bleak and hopeless, it is not yet too late. Time is of the essence. We can still make the world a better place. Let’s start with ourselves. Be mindful of our surroundings so that the kids can emulate us. Only then are we able to secure the minds of the world leaders of tomorrow. Our only hope for a brighter future ahead.

Many remember back in 2003, turning on their TV and seeing the bizarre story of the pizza delivery guy with a bomb around his neck. He warned police it was going to go off at any moment. He was not lying.

The incident, in Eerie, Pennsylvania is considered the most unusual crime in the history of the area. One of the FBI agents involved called it the weirdest case in the history of the agency. It embodies the idea of “fact being stranger than fiction.”

The truth behind an extraordinary criminal case, known as the “pizza bomber heist,” is brought to light in the four-part original documentary series from Netflix called Evil Genius: The True Story of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist, from executive producers Mark and Jay Duplass. These now very famous brothers were the force behind the very popular Netflix series, Wild Wild Country. Their involvement in Evil Genius only heightens the interest in the series.

RELATED: The Best True Crime Documentaries on Netflix (2018)

In a statement, Netflix sets the stage for the series: “In 2003 in Erie, Pennsylvania, a robbery gone wrong and a terrifying public murder capture the nation’s attention, and a bizarre collection of Midwestern hoarders, outcasts, and lawbreakers play cat-and-mouse with the FBI. Eventually, a middle-aged mastermind named Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong — once a town beauty, now a woman grappling with mental illness — is arrested. But 15 years later, Evil Genius proves there’s more to the conspiracy and murders than was ever thought.”

The series has “binge viewing” written all over it.

Contributors: Angelo Zammit & Ami Pancholi are regulars on the Radio Talk Show Price of Business & Co-Founders of the multi award winning marketing agency East Coast Loyalty

Well, here we are again, another sad story of a young 22 year old black man shot down by police in Sacramento California in his grandmother’s backyard and riddled with 20 bullets over holding a cell phone. This is a disgrace and makes me sick to my stomach. I myself am owned by no media outlet and can speak freely and as I choose without facing any repercussions whatsoever on this matter and I will exercise my right to do just that. I hold no dog in this race other than my pure and raw emotions that are invested as I see this young brother as my own. This is not a matter of whether this young man is black, white etc. rather an example of what has still yet to come and will continue if we the people do not hold these police accountable for their actions. No man, woman, police officer, government etc. has the right to play god and for some odd reason the gang in blue, (and not the Crips), are protected by the badge and high ranking officials as well as the judicial system that continues to sweep murder under the rug. That is exactly what this is, murder, there is no other way to analyze it no matter how many perspectives I attempt to create in my head.

Why are we allowing this to happen is the only thought that keeps replaying in my mind. We must all come together and demand justice for this child seeing that is exactly what he was in my eyes, 22 years of life is nothing compared to what lied ahead of him as far as his future. It is the only way to put our foot down and remind these so called authority figures who is in charge, who cuts their check as well as who they work for. We do not pay these men and women to go out into our communities and murder our children. We pay them to serve and protect, isn’t that the oath they so swear to uphold, or does that somehow get revoked once sworn in and they realize the power we bestowed upon them, placed and entrusted in their hands.

I am at a loss for words and angry beyond imagination, I am disgraced by our law enforcement and have been since child. They never seem to get it right ever, they constantly look to place blame and point fingers without ever holding any accountability for their own actions. They are full of excuses, arrogance and disregard for their true intent and purpose they are intended to serve. I was told once by a wise woman that when pointing the finger make sure you are standing in front of a mirror. That way you can see that it’s always pointing at the one who is truly the blame. If you want a change it starts with the man in the mirror!
THE STORY SUMMERY:

On Sunday March 25th 2018 a little after 9pm Sacramento police got reports that a man broke into at least three cars along 29th Street in the Meadowview area. Via a helicopter cam Clark was seen allegedly breaking house windows, looking into car windows and causing some kind of disturbance according to authorities. At that time police responded and approached Mr. Clark who they believed to be the suspect. Body cam footage from police give some detail and visual as to what exactly happened that night although it is shaky and quite dark. You can hear police asking the man to show his hands, then shouting “gun, gun, gun” before beginning to fire 20 shots into Clark. Clark was pronounced dead at the scene.

“He looked back at our officers and faced them. And had something, an object in his hand, and pointed it at our officers,” said Sacramento Police Sgt. Vance Chandler. “And at that time our officers believed it was a firearm, and out of fear for their own lives they fired their service weapons.”

This is such a terrible nightmare for any family to have to go through. Protesters around the country are rallying up demanding justice for the shooting and killing of Clark. it seems as though people are starting to paint a very dark picture of law enforcement and losing faith and trust in the judicial system as unnecessary killings continue to occur by police. Hopefully this is a wakeup call and new laws will be set in place before any police officer can resort to shooting and killing any suspect. Perhaps a very clear visual of a weapon and immediate danger would be required before pulling the trigger, but all we can do now is pray for the victim and his family, hope for a change in the system and demand justice for Clark.

Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP is investigating breach of fiduciary duty claims against the directors and officers of The Weinstein Company Holdings LLC (“TWC”) involving the potential failure to act and cover-up of sexual harassment and assault allegations directed at Harvey Weinstein.

If you are an investor in The Weinstein Company Holdings LLC or its affiliated companies (“TWC”) and suspect that your investment and TWC has been damaged by the failure of the officers and directors to act in the best interests of TWC, contact Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP. For more information visit: https://www.hbsslaw.com/cases/TWC.

Our initial investigation indicates that TWC’s officers and board of directors may have been aware of the allegations against Harvey Weinstein for many years, but have failed to act out of loyalty to Mr. Weinstein as opposed to TWC. One media source, TMZ, reports that the directors approved a 2015 contract that that contemplated future sexual harassment or assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein, and his opportunity to cure allegations of such conduct by paying a modest fine to the company.

News sources also report that TWC was able to hide this alleged conduct by threatening the strict enforcement of contracts prohibiting employees and victims from speaking.

“This story churns our stomachs. The only way to stop rampant sexual harassment and assault in the corporate environment, and in the entertainment industry in particular, is for shareholders to hold the officers and directors personally liability for the sustained or systematic failure to exercise oversight against this conduct,” said Hagens Bermanpartner Reed Kathrein. “Red flags were allegedly waived in the faces of the Weinstein Company’s Board for many years, and they not only ignored them, but reportedly knew about the payment of hush money. This is not legitimate business judgment to which the courts must defer. Harvey Weinstein’s alleged conduct has irreparably hurt the company and its shareholders.”
