5 Shopping Tips to Help You Save Money

For many of us, shopping takes up a huge proportion of the monthly budget. Whether you’re trying to cut the costs of shopping online, or you’re trying to save money on food shopping, here are some of our top tips to help you:

1. Shop Around

Most people tend to go to the store every time they need or want something, but that’s not the only way to get the items you’re after. Before visiting an expensive store, ask yourself these questions:

  • Can you find the item cheaper anywhere else? – We often purchase items without checking to see if we can get them cheaper anywhere else. It’s a good idea to do some research to see if you can save money. If you don’t mind purchasing items that are second hand and you don’t need something straight away, it’s a good idea to search on community add sites. There are lots of amazing bargains on these sites if you’re willing to spend time searching. You could even consider signing up for some Freecycle groups to see if anyone is trying to get rid of an item you’re after. This could save you a lot of money.
  • Can you borrow the item? – This is a brilliant money saver, particularly if you only need an item for a short period of time. For example, if you’re going to a wedding, instead of buying a new dress, why not ask a friend if you can borrow one of theirs?
  • Can you rent the item? – There are lots of stores that allow you to rent items for a short period of time. Home improvement stores and libraries are a brilliant example of this.

2. Time Your Purchase

If you only buy items when you need them, there’s a good chance you’ll have to pay full price for them. Planning in advance can help you to save huge amounts of money. You should ask yourself the following questions:

  • Will the item go on sale? – Most businesses in the U.S. hold sales during the year. If you can wait until one of these sales you could save yourself a lot of money. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are two brilliant days to shop online. You should even consider stocking up on everyday items like cosmetics and toiletries when they go on sale.
  • Is there a coupon or discount code? – Coupons and discount codes can save you even more money. Even some of the big department store chains offer their customers amazing discounts on purchases. A Kohl’s discount code, for example, allows you to save on home goods, kitchen items, furniture, bedding and more. You can even earn cash back at certain times of the year.

3. Choose Something Cheaper

If the product you want to buy is too expensive, then try searching for similar but cheaper versions instead. Working out why you want a particular product can help you to find a different way of achieving the same result more cheaply.

4. Buy in Bulk

Most of us don’t consider buying in bulk, but it can be a brilliant way to save money. You should even think about buying inexpensive items like shampoo and toilet roll in bulk. While the savings may look tiny to begin with, they can soon add up.

5. Barter

Lots of people find it hard to barter over the price of a product, but it can be a brilliant way to cut costs if you get it right. While you might not be able to negotiate a price on everything, there are lots of situations where you can negotiate a price, even in a retail store. There’s no harm in giving it a go.

Thanks to free-market capitalism, we’re now able to choose from a wide range of products at a wide range of prices. Saving money on purchases doesn’t require any specialized training and is a simple way for people to make their income go a little bit further. No matter what your income level why not try and save yourself some money by becoming a savvy shopper?
