For many entrepreneurs, obtaining a patent feels like a major accomplishment. But Babak believes a patent without a business strategy behind it can become an expensive piece of paper.
They discussed five practical ways the right patent attorney can help businesses grow, from protecting innovations that matter to investors and creating competitive advantages to avoiding costly mistakes, strengthening licensing opportunities, and sometimes advising clients not to pursue a patent at all.
Babak founded NovoTech Patent Firm in 2015 after building his career at some of the country’s leading intellectual property practices. A former partner at McDermott Will & Emery and attorney at Fish & Richardson, he also served as in-house counsel at Panasonic in Japan. His background as an electrical engineer gives him an unusual combination of technical, legal, and business expertise.
Today, NovoTech has grown to a team of 10 patent attorneys and one patent agent, specializing in advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, quantum computing, and telecommunications. The firm has handled more than 3,700 patent applications and worked with more than 5,000 inventors, ranging from entrepreneurs and startups to major corporations.
Babak is also a permanent Adjunct Professor at the University of Maryland, where he teaches Legal Aspects of Entrepreneurship, and co-author of the Patent Applications Handbook.
