7 Cycling Tips for Beginners

Cycling is a great way to adopt a healthy lifestyle and a workout activity you can enjoy. Not only is cycling a great form of exercise, but it allows you to get out of the house and explore the outdoors, too. You could also save a lot of commuting money if you choose to cycle to work instead of driving or taking public transport. 

If you’re looking to take up cycling but don’t know where to start, here are 7 cycling tips for beginners. 

1. Shop Around for Bikes 

There will be many different styles and sizes of bikes, suited for a variety of skill levels. In choosing your first bike, be sure to compare styles and prices in stores, and speak with attendants to get professional advice regarding the best beginner bike. You can also do some research online before visiting a shop.

2. Always Make Sure Your Tires are at the Right Pressure 

Just like your car tires, you always need to make sure your bike tires are pumped correctly before a ride. You can check the recommended pressure from the manufacturer for the particular bike you have, but it should also be noted on the side of the tire. 

3. Take Someone with You the First Time 

If you have cycling friends and you’re not feeling confident with your very first time on the road, then you can always take a more experienced cyclist with you to help you get used to it, and build your confidence on the road.

4. Stay Calm 

It can be very daunting to cycle on busy public roads for the first time, especially during peak times. It’s important to go at your own pace and not be pressured by traffic especially impatient drivers. Stick to the road rules and stay calm to avoid any risk of accidents. Even if you’re excited to get out on the road, don’t do too much at once. You don’t want to be attempting a huge track or incline for your very first bike ride.
