Hallucinogens: What Every Teenager Should Know

Read Time:2 Minute, 28 Second

Teenagers are always looking for ways to have a good time. Some may choose to trip on hallucinogens such as magic mushrooms or LSD, believing that they’re completely safe.

However, even if these substances are natural, there can be adverse side effects that no one is prepared for. Here’s what you need to know.

How Hallucinogens Work

Hallucinogenic drugs affect the brain in ways that cause altered perception and sensory interpretations. A person who has used a hallucinogenic can see, feel, and hear things that are not actually there. Keep in mind that in most cases, these hallucinations can be harmless, but other people may experience nightmares and/or feelings of paranoia.

It takes roughly 20 to 90 minutes for a hallucinogenic to kick in, and the effect can last anywhere for up to 12 hours. There are no alternate drugs or therapies that can stop a hallucination once it starts.

If you find yourself relying on hallucinogenics on a regular basis, then it may be time to consider an effective rehab for teens to get the help you need.

What are Dissociative Drugs?

Dissociative drugs fall within the category of hallucinogenic drugs. The symptoms are the same as well; the only difference is that dissociative drugs provide the sensation of being disconnected from the body. Some of the more common dissociative drugs include salvia and ketamine.

Natural Versus Synthetic Hallucinogens

These are the two main classes of hallucinogens; they both produce the same effects but are made in different ways. Natural hallucinogens are derived from plants, while synthetic is created in drug laboratories. Natural hallucinogens include ayahuasca, DMT, peyote, and magic mushrooms; synthetic hallucinogens include PCP and LSD.

When Hallucinogenics Become a Problem

Although there is no association between hallucinogens and high addiction risk, i.e. they do not suffer from cravings, a tolerance can develop, requiring teens to continue taking higher and higher amounts in order to achieve the same results. This leads to drug abuse where a person develops a dependence on these hallucinogens. They choose to hallucinate instead of living their daily lives, which affects their personal relationships as well as their responsibilities.

Risks of Taking Hallucinogens

Hallucinogens also have a profound effect on your heart. Taking them over an extended period of time increases the heart rate and blood pressure, which can be detrimental to your health in the future. Over time, you can develop heart and lung failure, as well as fall into a coma.

In the event that you or someone you know is starting to rely too heavily on hallucinogens to get through their day, then it may be time to call for professional help. It may be embarrassing at first, but professionals are not going to judge you for your choices; they are there to help you get over your addiction so that you can get back to living a normal life.
