Clinical research is becoming more digital, decentralized and
data-driven, but cognitive measurement can still be difficult to
integrate into a study at scale. That challenge was one of the key
motivations behind CogniFit’s work with Eurofins Optimed Clinical
Research, a CRO specialized in early-phase clinical trials.
The issue is not a lack of interest in cognition. Cognitive function
can be highly relevant when researchers need to understand the effects
of an intervention on areas such as attention, memory, processing
speed or executive function. The practical challenge is collecting
these measurements in a way that is standardized, repeatable and
operationally manageable within a clinical protocol.
Digital cognitive assessment may help address that gap. CogniFit’s
technology is designed to allow researchers to administer cognitive
assessments digitally, create study-specific protocols, manage
participants and collect data over time. For clinical research teams,
this may help make cognitive measurement easier to incorporate
alongside other clinical endpoints rather than treating it as a
separate, highly specialized process.
Our recent collaboration with Eurofins Optimed is important because it
moves this discussion from theory into an active clinical research
environment. Eurofins Optimed brings more than three decades of
experience in early clinical development, while CogniFit contributes
digital tools focused specifically on cognitive measurement. Combining
clinical research expertise with specialized digital technology is, in
our view, the direction the industry needs to take.
One potential benefit is scalability. A digital approach may support
standardized administration across participants and repeated
assessments throughout a study. This is particularly relevant when
researchers want to examine cognitive change longitudinally rather
than rely on a single measurement at one point in time. Digital
delivery may also help reduce some of the logistical requirements
associated with traditional testing and facilitate access to data for
research teams.
This does not mean replacing clinical judgment or established research
methodology with technology. The objective is the opposite: to give
investigators additional tools to capture cognitive data within
rigorous study designs. Digital health is most effective when it fits
into existing scientific and clinical workflows, rather than asking
those workflows to adapt unnecessarily around the technology.
The opportunity extends beyond studies focused primarily on the
central nervous system. Depending on the study design and context of
use, cognitive measures may be included as safety, tolerability or
exploratory outcomes in a broader range of pharmaceutical,
biotechnology, nutrition and medical-device research. As clinical
development becomes increasingly patient-centered, understanding how
an intervention may affect cognitive functioning can add another
useful dimension to the evidence being collected.
For CogniFit, the next step is therefore not simply to participate in
more individual trials. Our goal is to make validated approaches to
digital cognitive measurement easier to integrate into clinical
research at scale, where appropriate for the specific study context,
across indications, study phases, countries and technology
environments. That includes continuing to improve our research
platform, supporting customized cognitive protocols and enabling
integrations that allow cognitive data to become part of the wider
clinical-trial technology ecosystem.
The larger shift is straightforward. Clinical research is generating
more data than ever, but the value of that data depends on measuring
relevant outcomes reliably. Cognition is complex, yet that should not
make it impractical to measure. By combining scientific rigor with
digital delivery, we believe cognitive assessment can become a more
accessible and useful component of modern research.
