A first-time fund, also known as an emerging fund, is an investment vehicle formed by professionals who may lack a senior team with significant private equity experience. “Fundraising for first-time funds has its challenges,” says Jeb J. Altonaga, managing partner of Clearglass Capital Partners, which specializes in capital market and placement services for boutique firms in the emerging manager space.
“But first-time funds can be very successful. Without legacy issues that might complicate older businesses, and with managers focusing on market segments they know best, there is a high incentive for these founders to succeed. It’s crucial for their first fund to flourish to avoid losses for their backers,” explains Altonaga.
