Although mainstream outlets challenged Donald Trump frequently during his first term, their posture shifted noticeably in his second. Several major organizations adopted a more cautious approach. Two factors loomed large: a series of successful defamation actions by Trump brought against media companies, which created legal risk sensitivity, and concern that being overly critical could jeopardize access to the President. Apart from a few consistently hard-edged investigative outlets, much of the press operated with a lighter touch. That dynamic has finally begun to change.
Journalists are now pursuing more direct and sustained questioning. The scrutiny surrounding the DoD boat attacks—along with accusations that U.S. personnel engaged in “war crimes”—has prompted unusually pointed follow-ups. Renewed examination of the Epstein files has likewise resulted in more probing interviews and coverage. Reporters are also taking a firmer stance on Trump’s statements about presidential immunity, the Administration’s uses of federal law enforcement, and proposed civil-service restructuring.
Real-time fact-checking of economic and foreign-policy claims, particularly related to tariffs, NATO, and Russia, has become more common.
Collectively, these shifts indicate a mainstream press that has recalibrated toward more assertive questioning in 2025.
