Trump’s AI Pope Meme Sparks Outcry Among MAGA Supporters Following Pope Francis’ Death

Former President Donald Trump stirred controversy on May 1 with a Truth Social post featuring an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the pope, shared just days after the death of Pope Francis. The image, showing Trump in full papal regalia standing before the Vatican, included a caption joking about his potential to become the next pope.

Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025, at age 88, ending an 11-year papacy and prompting a global period of mourning ahead of his April 26 funeral at the Vatican.

Trump’s post, which appeared shortly after the funeral, immediately drew backlash from some of his own supporters—particularly conservative Catholics. On forums and social media, critics described the meme as disrespectful and ill-timed, accusing Trump of mocking the Church during a period of mourning. Some called it sacrilegious and warned it could harm his support among devout Christian voters.

Catholic leaders were also critical. Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York reportedly expressed deep concern about the meme, though no official statement from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops had been released as of early May. The post coincided with ongoing deliberations in Rome about the next pope, adding to its sensitivity.

This is not the first time Trump has used religious imagery in provocative ways. His June 2020 photo op outside St. John’s Episcopal Church, where he held a Bible aloft amid civil unrest, drew similar controversy—praised by some as bold, condemned by others as theatrical and irreverent.

Despite the backlash, some Trump allies and supporters defended the image as satirical and harmless. Vice President JD Vance dismissed the criticism, calling it exaggerated and pointing to more serious national concerns.

The AI-generated image remained on Trump’s Truth Social account as of May 4, and no apology or clarification had been issued. The incident underscores the ongoing tension between Trump’s flair for spectacle and the more traditional sensibilities of parts of his base.
