3 Secrets to Boost Your Metabolism

Read Time:3 Minute, 1 Second

Metabolism – what is the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear that word? If its anxiety and frustration, then we don’t blame you. Everybody has that friend that can eat whatever they want and still have abs of steal – ugh. In many instances, we credit this to good genes or simply a fast metabolism. But, how does one achieve a fast metabolism in the first place and is it possible to boost your own metabolism?

What is Metabolism?

Many people like to think of metabolism in terms of managing their weight, but it is actually much more complex. Metabolism is a chemical process that is needed to keep you alive, just like digestion for example. However, it is not simply just one process that can be easily manipulated because it is actually a series of bodily functions that exist in every single one of your cells throughout your body. And believe it or not, its main function is not to maintain a healthy weight but it is to sustain life by converting food into fuel to provide your body with usable energy to help you to breathe, think, move, pump blood and keep on living.

When most discuss their metabolism, they are referring to their body’s own ability to burn calories. This is largely determined by your resting metabolic rate (BMR). Your BMR is the number of calories – or energy – needed to support metabolic processes for survival while at rest. It represents close to 70% of your overall metabolism and is essentially the main engine in your body that fuels your calorie burn to help support weight loss.

With that being said, having a strong metabolism is beneficial because it will help your body to convert food into fuel much more easily to help support a healthy weight and provide your body with adequate energy throughout the day. Here are 3 secrets to boost your metabolism.

Get a Good Night’s Rest

Believe it or not but starting your day by getting a good night’s sleep the night before is crucial to supporting a healthy metabolism. Adequate sleep will ensure that you have plenty of energy to take on your busy schedule throughout the day, keeping your metabolism in working order.

Skip the Morning Donut

Heavy carbohydrates like bagels, instant oatmeal and donuts should be avoided first thing in the morning if you are looking to boost your metabolism. That is because those carbs will send you on a sugar rollercoaster which will take you down a miserable path of hunger, cravings, and fatigue. To keep your metabolism out of sugar burning mode and into fat-burning mode, opt for healthy breakfast options rich in protein, fiber, and healthy fats.

Stand UP!

Do you have to sit at a desk in front of a computer all day long? Believe it or not but staying sedentary all day long is terrible for your metabolism and overall health. The good news is that there are standing desk options available today that allows employees to stand while they work. If this is not an option for you, make sure you get up to take a walk for a few minutes every hour to keep your blood flowing.

Your metabolism is extremely important. If you are experiencing a bit of fatigue and low energy levels, it could mean that your metabolism could use some help. Exercise is another incredible way to give your metabolism a little bump. Look for gyms that offer HIIT training like spin clubs or boxing gyms in Bountiful Utah and follow our three secrets to boost your metabolism.
