Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal announced Wednesday he is running for president, joining a crowded Republican primary field that now stands at 13.
The 44-year-old, two-term governor made it official on Twitter and later at a rally in the New Orleans suburb of Kenner, where he lived as a congressman.
“I’m running for President of the United States of America. Join me,” he tweeted, linking to a campaign website.
During his late afternoon announcement in Kenner, Jindal said, “I’m not running for president to be somebody, I’m running for president to do something.”
On the volatile issue of immigration, he declared, “We cannot allow people to immigrate to this country so that they can use our freedoms to undermine our freedoms.”
Turning to terrorism, he added, “I will not be intimidated from talking about the fact that radical Islam is evil and must be destroyed. Containment is a strategy for losers.”
