Based in Los Angeles, Olivia Barrionuevo is an artist and photographer whose work is deeply inspired by her bicultural upbringing in a border city between the United States and Mexico, where she lived in Mexico while studying in the United States. She studied at the University of Guadalajara and the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and subsequently pursued studies in languages and art history in Europe. Her photography explores subcultural movements and historical traditions in search of intercultural dialogue. Barrionuevo’s work has been recognized by the Museum of Tolerance, the Lucie Foundation, the University of Judaism, the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles, the University of Sonora, and in exhibition spaces in Basel, Switzerland, and Mexico City.
The Metaphor of the Monarch
Barrionuevo’s work has consistently explored metaphor and symbolism as vehicles for storytelling. The monarch butterfly emerged naturally as one of these symbols because of its layered narrative of resilience, transformation, hope, migration, and the quiet strength required to navigate change.
The inspiration for this project came from wanting to create a space where those symbolic qualities could move beyond mere representation and become an experience in itself, allowing the viewer to physically inhabit ideas of resilience and transformation.
Creating Space for Active Emotional Engagement
The most significant impact this announcement brings right now is creating a space where audiences can actively engage with emotions rather than simply observe them. At a time when conversations around resilience, emotional well-being, and human connection are increasingly important, this work offers an immersive experience that invites reflection, dialogue, and shared understanding.
By transforming emotion into a physical and accessible experience, the project creates opportunities for audiences from all backgrounds—not just traditional art crowds—to connect with themselves and with one another in meaningful ways.
The Next Steps for Human Connection
Looking ahead, the goal is to continue expanding opportunities for immersive experiences that spark meaningful conversations around human connection. The focus is on developing new collaborations, reaching broader audiences, and continuing to create spaces where art can serve not only as a visual experience, but as a catalyst for reflection, dialogue, and transformation.
