New Research Reveals 7 Trends Disrupting Today's Workplace


Not culture, not relationship with their boss, but management transparency was the most important factor in determining employee happiness in the 2013 Employee Engagement Survey released today by TINYpulse. In addition, the research highlighted that an employee’s relationship with their co-worker is 23.3% more correlated to their happiness than is their relationship with their supervisor. As all organizations try to optimize employee happiness, the roadmap is clear that management transparency and recruiting more collaborative employees are priorities.

The study analyzed over 40,000 anonymous survey responses from over 300 organizations between September 1, 2012 and November 15, 2013. The research is unique not only in its size but also because it links survey responses with behavioral patterns of providing recognition to co-workers and suggestions to management.

The TINYpulse survey also showed that employee happiness is 23.3% more correlated to connections with co-workers than direct managers. There is a very strong correlation between employee happiness and their rating of co-workers with a .92 correlation coefficient compared to a .74 correlation coefficient between employee happiness and how they rate their direct supervisor. Niu adds, “This shows that who you work with is becoming more important than who you work for. We often think of employee happiness and satisfaction as being manager-driven, but now as the workplace becomes more cross-matrixed, collaborative, and “bottom-up,” the importance of co-worker relationships continues to grow. “

Additional findings from the research include:

  • Only 42% of employees know their organization’s vision, mission, and values.
  • 82% of respondents claimed that their manager clearly outlined their role and responsibility.
  • Team play and collaboration are the top trait employees love about their co-workers.
  • 18% of responses included a suggestion, and organizations that don’t promote employee suggestions are at an innovation disadvantage.
