Pope Francis arrives in the U.S. on Tuesday, and Catholic Relief Services’ staff and executives will be part of his visit in Cuba, Washington, D.C., New York and Philadelphia. Pope Francis reflects and inspires the mission of CRS. Here is a list of five topics we expect the Holy Father to talk about during his stay.
Care for Creation:
Pope Francis often talks about the life-threatening effects of climate change on those least responsible for creating the problem. For this population, climate change is real, solutions are needed now. Whether changing rain patterns that impact subsistence farmers inAfrica, more powerful storms taking unexpected routes in Asia or crop failures because of rising temperatures in Central America, Catholic Relief Services sees the effects first-hand around the world.
Care for Those in Need
Pope Francis’ emphasis on serving the poor speaks to the heart of Catholic Relief Services’ mission. Our staff, with decades of experience working with the poorest of the poor, brings this message alive in more than 100 countries around the world.
Shelter Those Fleeing War
Pope Francis is leading by example with the Vatican parish taking in a Syrian refugee family. Catholic Relief Services is working inGermany in resettling Syrian refugees and other migrants who have entered the country in recent months. That support will help provide accommodations, job assistance, early integration activities and volunteer training. This builds on CRS’ work to assist Syrian refugees in the Middle East – Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt – as well as in other parts of Europe such as Macedonia, Greece, Serbia and Albania.
Support Families
Pope Francis’ visit will take place against the backdrop of the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia on Sept. 26 and 27. As an organization working with families in more than 100 countries, Catholic Relief Services strengthens vulnerable families, no matter their faith, through a variety of social service programs and bringing their stories closer to families in the U.S.
Love and Show Mercy
Pope Francis will speak of the Year of Mercy he has called to begin in December this year. Love and mercy is why we do what do at Catholic Relief Services. We ensure that people have what they need to live a dignified life, whether that be food, drink or shelter. That’s why we rebuilt homes in Nepal, and that’s why we’re accompanying refugees in Europe—in those cases and in so many more.
