The EPA’s War on the Family Farm

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) submitted comments to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Thursday in response to troubling proposed rules that will disproportionately affect small farms across the nation.

The far-ranging rules will drastically change the way farms harvest, clean, ship, and sell produce. As a result, many small family farms that focus on locally-sourced produce will be forced to end practices that have been successful for decades –or close down.

“We are greatly concerned that the complexity and cost of these rules threaten to cause serious economic harm for thousands of small businesses across the country,” said NFIB Senior VP of Federal Public Policy Susan Eckerly. “When considering the small farmer, who, through these proposed rules is introduced to a completely new regulatory regime, it is hard to imagine how they will know where to begin. And while they may be an expert in farming the land, comprehending regulations, formalizing plans for their implementation and filling out paperwork is an extremely burdensome exercise that they simply do not have the time or resources to accomplish.”

The proposed rules, which were published in the January 16, 2013 edition of the Federal Register, govern Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption and Current good Manufacturing Practice and Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventative Controls for Human Food.

NFIB will continue to work through its coalition, Small Businesses for Sensible Regulations, in an effort to protect small businesses and American jobs from the impact of regulations. Click here for more information.
