John Bernard Shlaes, 73, of Bethesda, MD, passed away on November 26, 2015.
Mr. Shlaes served as a Sergeant in the United States Army Reserve and worked as the Director of Special Events for the Chicago Tribune, later moving to New York City as the Advertising Manager for the Nixon presidential campaign. In Washington, DC, he worked for USIA, the Peace Corps, and the President’s Office of Emergency Preparedness where he received a Distinguished Service Award. He then took a position on the staff as counselor to President Nixon and was the Director of White House Conferences under President Ford.
Mr. Shlaes also held positions with the Edison Electric Institute and the Global Climate Coalition. As a career coach, he mentored many executives into second careers.
He served on the boards of various advisory groups including the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Advisory Committee, the Washington Campus, Variety Club International, and the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services.
He received a President’s Award from USC for his volunteer work.
Mr. Shlaes spent the past few years traveling back and forth to San Diego as co-trustee of the Spreckels Properties LLC, helping to stabilize the family business, which includes the downtown Spreckels Theater.
His interests included travel, real estate investment and property management, tae kwon do, and furthering his education. He was an advocate and source of never ending support for his loved ones.
Mr. Shlaes was born in Los Angeles, CA. He received his BA degree from the University of Southern California and his Master’s degree from George Mason University.
He is survived by Kay, his loving wife of 49 years; his children, Darren and Katie; grandchildren Andrew, Holden and Hudson; his mother, Jacqueline Littlefield, siblings; and a myriad of wonderful friends and colleagues he made throughout his life’s journey.
There will be a celebration of his life held at the National Press Club, at a date to be determined.
