The Top 7 Things to Do Online When You’re Bored

By  USDR

In the old days, when we were bored we would have to literally find something to do or someone to interact with. Nowadays, all you need to cure that bout of boredom is a device that can connect to the internet. It seems as if we have the world at our fingertips, yet somehow most of us still manage to get bored with life and we tend to run out of ideas for fun things to do. Obviously, if you’re bored that means you haven’t been able to find anything to keep you entertained at the moment, which is when you start looking for new things to keep you busy during those dreadfully boring moments. To help you on your search for something to do, here are the top seven ways to cure boredom with the  internet:

1. Browse News Aggregation and Discussion Sites Like Reddit

Sometimes you just need the rest of the world to point you in the right direction, which is basically what you’re doing when you browse through the top stories and links on Reddit, 4Chan, and similar sites. The coolest thing about these directories is that there are sub-sections devoted to all sorts of topics, so regardless of what your interests and hobbies are, you’ll be sure to find a group or page that will give you plenty to read in your spare time. Alternatively, you can just check out the trending topics or use the random function to discover new  stuff.

2. Get Active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Other Social Networks

If you aren’t already using the aforementioned social sites to stay in touch with the outside world, then you’re definitely missing out on a lot of entertainment. If you are, but you still find yourself scrolling through your news feed while remaining extremely bored, it might be time to add some new friends and like some new pages. These sites aren’t just fun by themselves, they’re also gateways to the rest of the web and current events. Having active accounts on at least 3-5 social sites is by far the easiest way to stay on top of what’s happening in all your  circles.

3. Find an Online Arcade

Games are always good for a bit of fun, even if it only lasts for a little while. A good way to discover new games is to visit an online arcade. There are plenty to choose from, and Facebook even has an arcade of its own. There’s got to be at least one cool game that you haven’t played yet, and who knows, when you find it, maybe it’ll become your new favorite. Plus, if you haven’t tried the latest online games in a while, you’ll be surprised to see how far things have come since the days of basic flash  games.

4. Read and Watch Motivational and Self-Improvement Content

If you really can’t find anything to put a smile on your face, it might be time to think about bettering yourself with your free time. Chances are you’re bored, even though there are plenty of productive things you could be doing to not only cure the boredom but also work towards your goals. A great way to motivate yourself to get started is to watch a few motivational videos or read some self-improvement articles. Making this a daily habit will strengthen your ambition and help you achieve a better balance between your work and private  life.

5. Watch Some Netflix, Hulu, or YouTube

Video is perhaps the fastest and easiest way to solve a stretch of boredom. You just find something that looks good, press play, and there you go – instant boredom relief. If you don’t have a Netflix or Hulu subscription, you could take advantage of one of their free trials to see if it’s something you might be interested in paying for in the long-term. YouTube is also a great free option and discovering new videos is easy using the ‘related videos’ bar on the right side of the interface and by viewing the top trending videos. You might also want to subscribe to a few channels to make sure you have a constant supply of tailored content to  enjoy.

6. Visit Random Websites

Sometimes complete spontaneity is the answer when you just can’t make up your mind on what you want to do. There are a number of ways to visit random websites, but all of them pretty much achieve the same result – you land on a completely random web page. Of course, filters are in place to ensure you don’t pop up in some dark area of the web that you wish you’d never seen. Some web randomizers will also give you the option of pulling up random pictures, maps, and even personal blogs. If unplanned adventure is something you enjoy then you should certainly add at least one randomizer to your bookmarks for future use during times of  boredom.

7. Turn on Some Internet Radio or Playlists

Last but not least, why not enhance the mood a bit by listening to some of your favorite tunes and discovering new music? Pulling up music videos manually on YouTube can be a hassle and may only serve to further increase your boredom if you’re repeatedly playing the same videos. Sites like Pandora and iHeartRadio serve up endless hours of curated playlists and popular content in virtually every genre known to  man.

There’s No Reason to Ever Be Bored Online

With all of the above to do, and information about virtually all the known topics in the universe, it should really be impossible for you to ever suffer from boredom while browsing the web. If you’re bored, it’s not because there’s nothing entertaining to do or watch, it’s because you’ve simply run out of inspiration for what to do next. Hopefully, with the pointers above, you won’t find yourself scrolling through pages like a zombie in search of the next interesting or enjoyable  moment.
