TeenSafe, a smartphone control and monitoring service for parents, is launching an awareness campaign tackling the screen addiction epidemic facing children, tweens, and teens.
Today, most children have access to a variety of digital devices and services. However parents remain uninformed about the long-lasting effects of screen addiction, which can have a negative impact on school performance, social development, and sleep, according to a recent Jama Network study. TeenSafe encourages bloggers to join the #FightScreenAddiction campaign by engaging other parents in dialog and brainstorming new ways to balance screen time with other activities, while safely raising their children.
How Parents Can Fight Screen Addiction Now #FightScreenAddiction
“Screen addiction is something that few parents acknowledge, but all should,” said Ralph Acosta, CEO of TeenSafe. “In the 80’s, there were smoking sections on high school campuses, where it was acceptable for students and teachers to smoke. Today, this is unthinkable. The daily use of and reliance on electronic devices by our children is akin to smoking in schools, and it’s something we need to pay attention to now.”
A Kaiser Foundation study found that the average eight to ten year old spends nearly 8 hours a day with various media screens, while older children spend more than 11 hours a day. Internet and gaming addictions also come with long-lasting consequences that have been connected to structural and functional changes in the brain as children constantly engage with screens.
