Nowadays, if you want to run a successful business, you have to be doing more than just selling a good product or offering good service, those things alone simply aren’t enough. The birth of the Internet and the ability to use it as a tool for your business means that competition is greater than ever. With customers finding what they need at the click of a button or by scrolling down a page, if you aren’t getting your business out there it’s not going to last very long. Social media is a tool that every business should be using, and here’s why.

You can reach more customers

As of 2018, several different social media platforms are used around the world, and according to estimates, nearly 2.5 billion people are using them every day. Facebook alone claims to have over 1 billion users, which means that if your business is using it, it has the potential of selling to 1 billion customers. You can own a small vintage clothing store in Boston and be selling to people in London. You can be making handmade soap in your kitchen and shipping it around the world. If you’re putting your business and your products out there on social media then suddenly your location and your size no longer matter. The success of your business comes down to the selfie you’ve just uploaded to Instagram or the tweet you’ve just posted on Twitter.

It’s free

Cost is a huge factor in running a business; if you’re spending more than you’re making, you won’t survive for long. Advertising is expensive, and if you want to run a spread in a newspaper or a magazine, it takes time and resources that you don’t always have. For a long time being able to put out adverts that reached lots of customers was something only the bigger, more established businesses could do, but not anymore. Social media means that creating an advert has never been easier. Snapping some photos of your products for Instagram or announcing a sale on Facebook can all be done in minutes, and it’s free! What’s more, with free specialized platforms you can create attractive and easy-to-use landing pages for customers to see what you offer and buy your products at the click of a button.

Brand awareness

What’s great about social media (besides being free, and having access to billions of customers) is that you can speak directly to your customers; you can show them what your brand values. They can get to know you on a personal level and build a relationship with you, and everyone knows you always buy what you love. Maybe you only use organic ingredients or make all of your products by hand. With social media, you can talk about these things. You can make a quick video that shows how your product is created, or post some photos of new stuff you’re designing. You can even take some time to talk about why you got into the business in first place. It all helps to create a solid relationship that can help give your business an edge over your competitors.
